1TB One Touch 4 Lite-maxtor

1TB One Touch 4 Lite-maxtor Review

I am the type of user that likes to have a copy of my drives in the bank safe, in case of accidental damage. Since my 250 GBs USB external drive was becoming too small, I decided to buy this 1 TB back-up drive.

Unfortunately, none of these drives is particularly reliable, though the Maxtor seems to be one of the better choices available in this price range, 0-200, based on user feedback. Many of the complaining users are ones using these drives on a daily basis. Some of them are also using the software provided by the Maxtor.

I have no idea how good the Maxtor is when used daily. I make my backups, store the drive in a bank safe, and 9 months later I repeat the process. I do not use the Maxtor software. I use "BootIt", which is a partition management program, and I've been using it for the past few years. I did NOT install the Maxtor software on my computer. When plugging the Maxtor into the USB port, Windows will recognize it and offer to install the software which is on the drive itself (no CD provided with this one). One can refuse the Maxtor install if one so chooses.

I ran partition backups today, and all seemed to run pretty smoothly. Backing a 300 GBs partition took about 4 hrs on the USB connection. The drive did not heat up as much as the other one I used before, probably because of its vertical alignment.

Great for a week or so... - Eli Bishop - virginia
I bought a 500GB and this 1TB one at the same time. Not only did they both fail, but sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. There is no way to turn off the drive without unplugging it. The included software is terrible. I contacted Maxtor for replacements, but they wouldn't replace with a Seagate that they also sell. These two drives are some of the worst electronic products I have ever owned.

Ideal for backups or just really large files - Timothy P. Little - Chicago
The amount of space available on this drive (around 937GB) is absolutely amazing. In addition to the ample space that this drive provides, it also comes with its own backup software which allows you to create custom backup schedules. Just tell it when you would like to backup (day of week and time) your hard drive (or whatever specific files that you specify) and it will do so automatically. It even has a button on the front that you can customize to run any application you choose. The only thing I don't like about this drive is that it is not USB powered, but for 937GB of space, I think it is very much worth finding an outlet to plug it in. You never have to worry about running out of space with this drive.
